Improving Communication for people with dementia
People with dementia can find it difficult to communicate clearly, including saying what they want to say and understanding others. This may lead to them getting distressed, for example becoming verbally and physically agitated. Poor communication can lead to poor care and the way we say things can calm or inflame a difficult situation.
The VOICE studies have:
Identified what skilled practitioners do in interaction to help things go smoothly, including how to avoid, de-escalate or resolve episodes of distress
Developed training resources with stakeholders to teach others about what works
Tested whether these resources are useful to hospital staff and find out what helps and hinders their use in everyday practice.
