Modules
The training contained in these online modules is based on research evidence from the VOICE and related studies. We hope they will help healthcare practitioners and others to improve the experience of people living with dementia, through more effective communication.
Instructions: You can click through each module a page at a time. The names of people in the videos have been silenced in the recordings and changed in the transcripts and activities.
VOICE2 Modules: dealing with distressed behaviours
Introduction to distressed behaviours
This module will set the scene for the 3 other modules on distressed behaviour and should be completed before them. We will consider what we mean by distressed behaviour in dementia. You will then learn about, and reflect on, how and why distressed behaviour in dementia arises.
Dealing with different realities
This module considers the challenge for people with dementia and those caring for them when they have different views of reality. You will see examples of how different ways of responding to this can increase or reduce the person with dementia’s distress. You will consider how to apply this knowledge to your own interactions.
Following the rules of conversation
This module considers situations in which healthcare practitioners don’t follow the usual rules of conversation in their interactions with people with dementia. You will see how people with dementia react to this and how it can lead to increases in conflict, depending on how we deal with it.
